Our Sioux/Cheyenne tipis allow tribal gatherings to achieve an authentic level. This conical structure is durable, provides warmth and comfort in winter and is cool in the summer. Used for powwows or encampments for those wishing to preserve and pass on their heritage and traditions.

TIPI COMPONENTS

TIPI COVER is the exterior shell of the tipi and when combined with poles, make up the basic structure. The cover life depends on the quality of fabric selected as well as proper care and storage. We offer two choices of fabric to meet your budget and needs.

10 oz. NATURAL CANVAS is a single filled fabric that is breathable but susceptible to mildew and mold. This fabric has a shrinkage factor of up to 10% that may result in reducing the tipi diameter.

10 oz. FIRE RETARDANT MARINE CANVAS is of a higher quality than natural canvas. It is breathable, water repellant, has a tighter weave and is treated for mold and mildew resistance. The flame retardant treatment has a CPA1-84 rating (a high California Fire Marshall spec.). Fabric shrinkage is minor.

Porcupine Canvas’ tipi cover seams are triple stitched for added strength. Lacing pin strip is doubled and holes are finished to prevent fraying. The bottom is hemmed and reinforced with loops sewn into the perimeter every 2’.

SMOKE FLAPS protrude from the peak to regulate the flow of air and provide a good draft for the tipi fire. Each flap is opened and closed by a pole at the top end and a rope at the bottom end. Depending on wind conditions, the flaps are maneuvered, as you would open a window for ventilation. The top corner of the flap has a reinforced pocket to hold the smoke flap pole.

TIPI LINER encircles the lower interior walls, helps to seal the bottom from drafts, assists with ventilation and adds extra insulation space for colder weather. A must if you plan on having a fire. These panels are 6’ high.

TIPI DOOR seals off the entrance keeping out the elements and providing privacy. Our standard door is a single piece of canvas 56” long with ample ties to secure it to the poles. The deluxe door is 64” long, has an inside rain gusset and three support pole pockets that house the 1” dowel or branch.

POLES Although we do not sell the poles, we can pass along some useful information to you. Pine, Balsam or Tamarack poles, peeled, are recommended and should be long enough to extend above the crossing point. Longer poles are recommended for permanent setups because they tend to be a bit thicker and hold up better in strong winds. If you are moving the tipi often, smaller, lighter, poles are recommended. Each tipi requires 3 tripod poles and additional support poles relative to the size of the tipi. To determine pole length, multiply the diameter by 1.3 (e.g. 18 foot tipi x 1.3 = 23.4’ pole lengths).
